A posed photo with some truth to it: patrols were often sent into no-man’s-land to listen for enemy activity, often having to crawl dangerously close to the enemy's trenches.
Concerning the improvised hearing device, one wonders: what would the odds be of surviving a patrol into no-man’s-land carrying a large metal funnel?
